Blank Canvas: The Art of Rehabilitaion

On Display: October 26 - November 20, 2021

The North Texas State Hospital has many robust programs aimed at rehabilitating their patients. One such program is headed by local artist Marie Alaniz. The freedom of expression granted in an art studio combined with adequate structure provided by instructors, such as Marie, has proven to have many benefits for patients over the years. Improvements are most often seen in social development and emotional vulnerability. Recognition and changing of personal patterns of feelings, behaviors and thoughts are also seen in many patients.

Artwork proves to be a wonderful tool for self reflection for the creator, and also often for the viewer. The RRVM is proudly partnering with the NTSH to exhibit art created by current patients.

Each piece will be displayed anonymously to protect patient identities. This erasure of the artist will allow viewers to project their own ideas on to the work. We hope that this exhibition helps to destigmatize the often times invisible mental health struggles faced by 1 in 5 Americans.
